Font woes

30 Sep 2004  in the early evening  Matt Winckler

Occasionally the time comes along when I need a new font for something or the other, and I realize it’s time to go wading around the quagmire of “free font” sites (because I’m usually not in the mood to shell out $30 for a font–unless a client happens to be paying for it). And I once again realize that, by and large, font sites are run by a pack of pathetic marketing losers.

This is because virtually no web site advertising free fonts actually has free fonts–no, what they have are a hundred links to other free font sites. It does not take long to realize that you’re caught in an indefinite recursive function, and from there it’s only a matter of time before your stack overflows and you have to go kill somebody. (The smart operator terminates the process early on to avoid such a stack overflow, because the consequences are usually permanent consignment to “write-only memory”).

For my future reference, wantedfonts.com is one of the precious few sites that actually has fonts you can download, listed by category. It might also be plastered by ads, but I wouldn’t know, since I’m running Firefox with Adblock.
