Install a USB scanner in Gentoo Linux

There is an excellent howto install a USB scanner in Gentoo Linux at Gentoo Wiki. Incredibly, it took me only minutes to get my Epson CX-5200 scanner working just now. And here I’ve been putting it off for months out of dread of having to mess with unsightly and evil things under the hood!
