Buried surveillance cameras

I learned today that buried surveillance cameras are coming onto the stage. This didn’t surprise me, but I was surprised that the Israelis evidently just invented the technology. I always assumed that the gubmint had had things like this for years!
That said, I think the camera needs one vital improvement to make it really worthwhile: it should be capable of being fired by artillery for long-range deployment (a la mine shells). That way you could put cameras in more hazardous places without endangering troops or alerting the folks you looking for to the fact that there might be cameras around. Another idea might be to deploy them from Predator drones–design a small rocket that would fire the canister into the ground, and if necessary perhaps equip the canister with some sort of robotic digger to make small adjustments to its depth and position.
