Matt on memes

24 Jan 2006  in the early evening  Matt Winckler

It must be the season for memery
The most inane of this age’s scenery
Despite my attempts
To express my good sense
Folks still tag with memetic machinery.

But this tagging I won’t tolerate
(I’m admittedly quite obdurate)
Having said my piece once
I’ll not act like a dunce
Nor on my firm ground vascillate.

“To heck with these memes!” I declare,
Though at times I may speak to thin air.
“Surely none want to know
All the places I go
Or the foods that I like - nay, who cares?”

Then of course there’s the black hats all leering.
With the info I’d be volunteering,
Who knows what bad folks
Would snap up my keystrokes
And start some ill-willed profiteering?

I grant that’s most likely farfetched;
My life on the web is well sketched.
Thus caught out in a lie,
I will yet still say “fie!”
And pretend my last rhyme was unetched.

So now it comes down to the core.
Just what about memes makes me sore?
With no final retreat,
The gall mixed with the sweet,
Your good pleas I’ll no longer ignore.

To be honest, the reason I stride
Such great lengths all fair memes to deride
Is tied up in tradition
(Now become supposition)
In a word, it is all about pride.

You see, in my lengthy experience
A meme is naught more than deficience
In taste and locution
Causing substitution
Of good writing for merely insipience.

In addition to lacking in style,
I find that most memes but beguile.
Their author intends
To further the ends
Of his ego while hiding a smile.

While I do have an ego that’s vast
Memes fall short of my urge for bombast.
To be perfectly frank,
I’m fond of the swank -
I like to be pompous with class.

[...] But Matt’s reply to my tagging him, I have to say, is even better than the actual meme. [...]

Well… I figured out why I couldn’t comment. It’s because the permalink doesn’t capitalize the M in matt. Which leads to a 404.

    But… Good job!

Thanks for pointing out the permalink problem…must be a bug in WP2. I’ll have to take a look at it. I must say, thus far I really can’t compliment them on this release.

OK, now I see. I appreciate your honesty! :-) The only thing is that women LIKE to know what other people eat - sometimes it sparks a thought like “Oh, I love that and I haven’t made that in ages - I’ll have include it on my next menu plan.” And sometimes, if someone likes 4 particular movies best, and you’ve never seen any of them, you might take that as a movie recommendation - which is nice when there’s so much junk out there. Anyway, that’s my two-cents on the tag thing. But your poem is definitely more humorous and interesting to read!
