Sick in the mind

24 Feb 2006  around lunchtime  Matt Winckler

I don’t know what’s come over me. My name is Matt, and I want an iMac.

I think it started when I was eating lunch and watching a demonstration on how to create a weblog (e.g., write a blogging engine, from scratch) in 15 minutes using Ruby on Rails. The guy doing the demo was running everything on OS X, and it was all…pretty. Even writing code was pretty. Everything was pretty. All of the windows cast beautiful hardware-accelerated shadows, and all of the buttons had an aqueous glow radiating about them. Yea, it was pleasing to the eye.

And so then I started thinking that it would be a beautiful thing if all my applications always just worked, and everything looked nice, and I never had to spend time cursing Linux because my generic pieces of hardware didn’t work, and everything would look nice, and when I needed to I could take a hit of BSD from the command line. We would all hold hands and sing a happy flower song, because everything was pretty and it worked and I could write complicated applications in only 15 minutes, and all of my computing problems would be forever solved.

And lo! from Apple.com they were offering me a reasonably powerful iMac for a mere $1300, which is even less than twice as much as what it would cost me to build a comparable generic machine.

So I awoke from my dream.

2 vociferations follow:

  1. 3 hours, 12 minutes after the fact, The Devil responded:

Buy it. Buuuuuy it. You can install linux in a virtual pc on disk. Besides… 20 inch LCD.

  2. * * * * *
6 hours, 22 minutes after the fact, Matt Winckler responded:

I think you really have become the little materialist demon on my shoulder. I notice you seem to be the only one around here who thinks I’m worth a Das Keyboard, and now this. If I start a fundraising campaign to buy myself an iMac, will you contribute $10?
