Choices, choices

23 Oct 2007  in the early evening  Matt Winckler

An overly-generous service manager at work bought each of her team members, of which I was one, a $25 gift certificate to ThinkGeek. And so now comes the harrowing decision: what exactly to spend it on. The shortlist follows.

  • LED Faucet Light. Naturally, only the temperature-sensitive version would do.
  • The meh. Flask. I would love to have this one sitting on my desk at work, where alcohol is most strictly prohibited. Just because.
  • Wi-Fi Detector Shirt. Gary twigged me on to this one, and it is a serious contender. That shirt is about nine kinds of awesome. The problem is, I virtually never go out in public without a collared shirt on, so I question how much I would actually wear this thing. Plus, I would think that dealing with people’s questions and expressions of incredulity would get tiresome after a while. And then there’s the whole “risk of getting shot by a cop who mistakes your T-shirt for a terrorist explosive device” aspect.
  • Palmsize Havoc Helicopter. Mark got one of these (or one very similar) and confirms that it is quite entertaining to fly. One of the demo videos even had a 4-year-old flying it…Hans would definitely get a kick out of it.
  • Aeropress Coffee Maker. Even though I’m happy with my French press, I’m always interested in more diverse ways to make that blessed black beverage.
  • Polarity. For a while I thought I was settled on this, but as you can see, reality is far from it. They’re out of stock until mid-November, giving me time to think of other things to buy. Polarity didn’t exactly garner rave reviews at BoardGameGeek either, which gives me pause.

How shall I decide? That is the question. The simple answer, there being six choices, would be to roll a d6 and be done with it. However, that seems rather needlessly arbitrary. There must be a better way!

2 vociferations follow:

  1. 1 day, 20 hours after the fact, Pat responded:

Man, those things are all kinds of awesome.
That t-shirt is hilarious. Somebody was really ingenius to think that up. I think my vote goes toward the t-shirt, because I would love to see someone walking around in that. :-) I actually tried to buy Polarity for my brother for Christmas last year, but they were all out.

  2. * * * * *
2 days, 11 hours after the fact, Matt Winckler responded:

I think–think, mind you–that I’ve settled on the palmsize helicopter. The shirt, while extremely cool, does seem like it would attract inquisitive people as a candle attracts moths.

But you know it ain’t over till the cash register dings.
