About Matt Winckler

This About page is Different. In that regard, it is substantially like me. I have decided that instead of a brief little narrative about what I like and what I don’t, I’m going to use a stereotypical approach. I’ll list all the things I am or do that might typically fall into a stereotype, and you can build an impression based upon your personal prejudices for or against those stereotypes. It’ll be fun!

Matt’s List O’ Helpful Stereotypes

Last revised on 27 August 2008

Stereotypes are presented in no particular order.

  • I am a Reformed Christian. A Calvinist, if you feel compelled to put an “ism” on it.
  • I am a postmillennialist.
  • I believe in paedocommunion.
  • I am an American.
  • I am deeply conservative, but certainly not in the Republican faux-conservative sense. I might possibly be described as a Libertarian, but there again I disagree with much of their social agenda. A better description of my political views would probably be aberrant. I tend to think that universal suffrage does more harm than good.
  • I am a professional software developer. C# is my current specialty.
  • I was homeschooled.
  • I believe strongly in the virtues of classical Christian education. In the absence of such a school, I believe homeschooling is a good option.
  • I once used Linux as my primary operating system at home. Then I got fed up with fixing it. Now I use the Windows 7 RC. That makes me a sellout. I also own an iMac, and I want an Apple laptop. I don’t know what that makes me.
  • I proudly own multiple firearms, including handguns, but not enough.
  • I ride a motorcycle.
  • I very occasionally play tennis at a very amateur level. I do not wear white shorts while doing so.
  • I am married with three children.
  • I am very fond of board games, particularly German-style board games (Eurogames) and wargames, though having never played hex-and-counter wargames, I dare not claim to be a true grognard.
  • I am fond of good beer and wine.
  • I smoke a pipe on occasion.
  • I like to play cards with friends, especially when petty cash is involved.
  • I like to design web pages. I designed this theme.
  • I don’t own a television.
  • I believe the world described in Heinlein’s Starship Troopers is a near-utopia.
  • I am a browncoat.
  • I enjoy RTS games, particularly Supreme Commander, Total Annihilation, and Starcraft. I am also a fan of Portal and the Half-Life 2 series.
  • I thoroughly enjoy Nethack. I’m still looking for a board game version.
  • I own an SUV, and would not consider selling it even in the face of $5/gallon gasoline (which test of dedication seems to be a far greater possibility today than when I first wrote that statement).
  • I grew up the son of an orchardist, 20 miles out of town.
  • I’ve been fired before for things I wrote on this blog. I was in the wrong, but unfortunately so were they. I am more circumspect now.

That’s it. If you are sentient and friendly even after processing all the above stereotypes, Matt can be reached via e-mail: try his first name at this domain.
