Autumn

Fall weather is teasing us here in the Tri-Cities. After the scorching weather of August, September brings a week of mid-70-degree temperatures followed by a week of mid-80-degree temperatures (which still feel cool after August heat). September-November and March-May are the times at which I really love the Tri-Cities. The summer might scorch and the winter might be gray and boring, but the majority of the year is temperate and lovely. Spring comes early and summer slowly ebbs into fall.

This is t-shirt & jeans weather. Sandals are still an option, but tennis-shoes won’t make your feet swealter. Sweatpants are comfortable in the morning, and Hans can wear his “moose jams” — his blanket sleeper — all morning. Jaeger no longer screams, demanding to be placed in front of a fan; he can actually wear more than a light onesie and stay comfortable.

These are days where the windows can be open from dawn to dusk, allowing the breeze to meander through the house. Apologizing for the late sunrise, the brisk morning air wakes me up as I give Jaeger his 5:30 feeding. The coolness makes hot coffee a delight once more. The slight afternoon breeze makes me want to pull out my teacup and saucer and make tea without ice. Some evenings bring the smell of summer rain and mowed grass, with only a light sprinkle keeping the scent’s promise.

The leaves may not yet be turning, but the winds whisper that it is autumn. The cold has not come, and the Tri-Cities is greener again as the heat no longer parches the water-starved lawns. The Tri-Cities is the best place to be in September and October.
