Computer Time
I need help with this one:
Geste at Home #5:
When do you use the computer? Do you set time-limits or any guides for yourself? Do you have any strategies for avoiding the computer time-vortex or the ignoring of other responsibilities? Does your particular placement of your computer help or hinder?
Our computer is set up so that it isn’t in the main living area, but it is in the “office” (i.e. the junk-collection room, messiest room, worst place for small children), set up so that if I sit at the computer, my back is to all else. With the corner desk, my periphery vision doesn’t even allow a visual on the boys. And, if I try to limit use to naptime, then suddenly naptime has vanished in the midst of blog-reading and google-searches and email-replyings…which I do more of since it’s “quiet time” and I don’t have to worry about what the boys are doing and can actually follow a train of thought for minutes on end…naptime is also the most efficient time to get certain chores out of the way, too, but I find that after too much time on the computer, I need a restorative beverage (i.e. caffeine) to get me out of “computer fog” and into real life. Am I just strange in that way? Any ideas?

My computer is in the living room at the present moment- so I get on when I can sit for a few minutes. I don’t recomend the computer in the living area if you can help it though! It can be distracting, especially when company is over, the men tend to gravitate to it.
you’re absolutely not “strange that way”. I definitely get “computer fog”, even after as little as 15 minutes online, depending on how tired I am. I wrote about some herbal remedies for it in a blogpost this fall… but really I find getting up and stretching every few minutes to be the best solution. It’s just that I can’t always remember to do that!
