Hands-on Material
I’m boring, I don’t like hands-on projects, but today I was able to literally put my hands on a few curriculums I’d heard of and read of but never seen. There is no substitute for actually looking through something and seeing from a practitioner what she does with it and how it works.
My AHG co-leader, Mrs. Bennett (no, nothing like that Mrs. Bennett), let me walk over to her house this morning (she lives a couple blocks away) and see her stuff. She uses and loves
She also uses and loves the simple, no-nonsense phonics program my mom has had since the beginning: Teach America to Read and Spell.
I was pretty impressed with Math-U-See, although for some reason it feels almost treacherous to do anything but Saxon. :) I am very drawn to the teacher aspect of it, though. A video teacher is still superior to a mother with cramped time or limited understanding, I think, and certainly superior to the cold, hard printed word.
I very much appreciated the visit; I think as much as possible I will try to find someone who has used a program or curriculum and ask to see it and flip through it and watch how they use it before committing to a purchase.
