RECOMMENDED

The Well-Educated Mind, Susan Wise Bauer; the calender will list recommended readings from this and we will be using the note-taking strategies she suggests.

For the writing section of the class. MLA Handbook; you’ll be required to get this at some point in your college career. This manual has formatting instruction, writing process helps, and — most importantly — how to cite other material in your papers. You really should have either the fifth or sixth edition before we begin the research paper in December.

For the writing section of the class. The Elements of Style, Strunk & White; a classic with information on how to avoid common mistakes and how to sound educated without being stilted or verbose.
