Boy Books

Monday  in mid-morning  Mystie

All of these would be suitable for girls, as well, but these are our boys’ favorite tales:

* *[St. George and the Dragon](http://www.amazon.com/Saint-George-Dragon-Margaret-Hodges/dp/0316367893/sr=1-2/qid=1168198672/ref=pd_bbs_2/103-0868767-1449427?ie=UTF8&s=books “St. George and the Dragon”)* by Margaret Hodges and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman. This is Mommy’s #1 favorite. The language is exquisite, retaining several of the key phrases from *Faerie Queene* and utilizing alliteration often, and the illustrations are intricate, bold, and absolutely beautiful.

* *[Bedtime for Frances](http://www.amazon.com/Bedtime-Frances-Trophy-Picture-Paperback/dp/0064434516/sr=1-1/qid=1168198953/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-0868767-1449427?ie=UTF8&s=books “Bedtime for Frances”)* by Russell Hoban, illustrated by Garth Williams. The other books in the series are illustrated by Lillian Hoban, and though not as good as Mr. Williams’; Mommy likes these ones even more than Hans, and I can’t get through the first two readings of any of them without laughing out loud myself.

* *[Frog and Toad are Friends](http://www.amazon.com/Frog-Toad-Friends-Read-Book/dp/0064440206/sr=1-1/qid=1168199087/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-0868767-1449427?ie=UTF8&s=books “Frog and Toad are Friends”)* written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel. Uncle Geoff introduced these classics to Hans, and Hans enjoys the basic storyline (and Daddy’s voices for Frog and Toad) while Mommy and Daddy crack up at the underlying irony in each story.

* *[In the Beginning: The Story of Creation](http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Story-Creation-Crossway-Books/dp/0891079971/sr=11-1/qid=1168199272/ref=sr_11_1/103-0868767-1449427 “In the Beginning”)* published by Crossway, but now out of print. My dad bought it on clearance, I believe, and I am so glad he did! It is a book of beautiful photography with Genesis 1:1-2:3 in King James as the text. If you ever see it anywhere, grab it.

* *[Skippyjon Jones](http://www.amazon.com/Skippyjon-Jones-Judy-Schachner/dp/0525471340/sr=1-1/qid=1168199436/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-0868767-1449427?ie=UTF8&s=books “Skippyjon Jones”)* Aunt Emma bought this for Hans for Christmas, and although dubious upon hearing her summary of it, as soon as I listened to her read to Hans I loved it.

**What are yours?**

One vociferation follows:

  1. 5 hours, 13 minutes after the fact, Andrea Nelson responded:

Lately we’ve been reading “Momma, Will You?” by Dori Chaconas. It was one of the latest free books from Ready for Kindergarten. It’s a cute story, nice illustrations and repetitive enough that Grace can “read” the book on her own now.

We’ve also been reading a lot of Curious George. Scott has a large volume containing about 8 stories. I think the heft of the book is interesting for Grace right now and the stories are fun.

Looks like MC-LIB has a few on your list . . . we’ll check them out!
