freezer

Tuesday  around lunchtime  Mystie

Well, I have a new freezer.

It was completely unexpected.

Our previous freezer was an upright hand-me-down from Matt’s grandma and, judging by the rusty-yellow color, probably dates at least to the 70’s. I can’t even remember the brand now, but it was a classic department store that no longer exists.

In this last move, the door to the freezer was damaged and no longer sealed completely. I tell you, more things were broken and damaged in this move than any other we’ve had; I’m not sure what the deal was. I didn’t notice for probably a month when I noted that the frost build-up was much more than it should have been, especially since I had defrosted it and cleaned it out before we moved. We first thought it was the gasket and put finding a replacement down on our to-do list. Another month and the frost itself was making the door more difficult to close and we had to start taping the door shut. We couldn’t find a replacement seal for the door; I even called a special appliance shop and had the lady look if she could special order the part. It’s way too old, she said; they don’t make replacement parts for it and nothing made for modern freezers would retrofit to it.

Then Matt noticed the large dent in the door and upon further examination of the seal, didn’t think it was a problem with the gasket anyway, but most likely a problem with the door itself. Well, with a freezer half full of food, what do you do? Thankfully, we both see eye to eye on the necessity of a freezer, and upon determining that there was no fixing this freezer, Matt went out that evening to price-check new freezers.

We bought another upright from Lowe’s, but it had to be special-ordered. Matt went with a manual defrost over a frost-free model because the salesman told him how the frost-free worked and that it would mean more freezer burn if anything stays in the freezer for awhile. Manual defrost models are cheaper, too, although Matt ended up getting a bigger one for the same price rather than the same size for a bit less. Our family will only grow, after all, and Matt wouldn’t want there to be any questions about the feasibility of ever getting half a cow again. :)

So the delivery guys came today. They hauled away the old freezer and set up my new freezer. It’s white and shiny and clean. It was a bummer to have to spend the money and replace the old one, especially with more home repair still waiting in the wings to consume our resources, but since it had to be, I cannot help but admit that a new, sparkly white appliance is something that cannot help but make me smile and, yes, lift my whole spirit — especially when I get to sort through things and organize it to boot. :)
