No, not anything that will make it into Martha Stewart Living.
Today I picked up a little codeine, a bottle of percocet, and some prednisone, along with some antibiotics.
You see, I’m having my wisdom teeth out on Friday. I went to the dentist a week after my miscarriage, had x-rays done, and they said I should get my wisdom teeth out at my convenience. They pose no immediate problems, but one is poking out and they could seriously mess up my braces-job; such problems would, they said, mostly likely occur during a pregnancy when gums are softer. So, they told me, it would be best to get them out in my mid-twenties when I’m not pregnant or breastfeeding and certainly before I’m thirty. Well, said I, there’s no time like the present, and had my consultation in December and scheduled the surgery after the holidays.
If you’re going to have your wisdom teeth out, though, it seems that January is the perfect time of year. A week after hearty holiday fare, have a surgery done that makes it uncomfortable and unhygienic to eat. When the weather is cold and damp and soups are the main fare, go on a two-week soft-foods-only diet. Vegetable soup sounds better in January than a frozen yogurt or smoothie.
Matt had his wisdom teeth out in high school and has oft waxed nostalgic about nitrous oxide. So, when the choice came whether to be out or not, I chose not. The doctor cautioned me by pushing a bit on my jaw, showing me that I would still feel some pressure. Ha, I scoffed, I’ve naturally delivered two children. Upon reflection and my husband’s questions, however, I realized that the paperwork all mentioned novocaine without mentioning laughing gas. I called today to confirm my appointment as directed and brought up this oversight. No, they said, I was scheduled to receive novocaine only. Hm, replied I, could I get nitrous oxide with that? Yes, said she, but it was cost you extra. That’s fine, said I, breathing a sigh of relief that that misunderstanding was now cleared up.
So we’re having our last grass-fed steak Thursday night and Matt’s taking Friday afternoon off. I cooked a turkey today and am crockpotting the bones for a good broth. I’ll be sleeping well over the weekend, even if I won’t be eating well….or at all.

Glad you have the order for the NO - it’ll certainly help. :)
It’s good to have the scrips ready too. Even if you don’t use them it’s nice to keep for awhile. I just headed off a nasty uti with some yucky cranberry juice and leftover penicillin from Geoff’s wisdom teeth episode.
Good luck! They pulled mine with just novacaine- it didn’t really hurt, but there was a lot of pressure, and a little pain. It felt like when you were little, and you had a loose baby tooth you were trying to pull out- the ripping feeling. I have three more wisdom teeth to go- the valium helped get me through it so I’ll go back, I think! I’ve heard other people say that NO is pretty much like you were out for it. Pretty much no pain or memory of it. I wish they gave me that option! I wonder why they didn’t….hmm.. Anyways, my best advice- don’t foget you just had teeth removed, and then go suck through a sippy cup straw to see if it’s working or not. It hurts.. I know.
AmySue, you should try asking if they do it and how much it is. They didn’t offer it to me, either, I had to ask. It was really good stuff. I thought they were done at one point and he said, “Ok, one last one.” And I actually felt relieved because I wanted to stay on the NO a little longer. :) They increased the amount, I think, for that last one ’cause it was difficult and I was almost totally out of it with swirling light behind my eyes and I thought, “Oh, wow, this is why people do drugs.” :)
