More books

Tuesday  just before lunchtime  Mystie

Yesterday I ordered some books. Books for the school year of 2007-2008. Books for me and books for the boys. I’m excited and so is Hans. We will look forward to our packages arriving next week. :)

Bernard Clayton’s New Complete Book of Breads 30th Anniversary Edition

Well, this one is for the school year because it won’t be cool enough to cook until then. :) I’ve checked this out from the library three times, and the library book opens easily to the breads I have made the most often. Matt was just fine with me purchasing this one. :)

The Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had

This one is for my own education. I am going to hostess and guide a small book reading group of 4 great homeschooled high school kids this summer and school year and we’ll be using this a bit. I also want to do my own reading of the modern classics, against which I have much prejudice but not much knowledge. I’m not sure both will happen the same year.

The Golden Children’s Bible

This is a picture Bible story book that was recommended by classical-homeschooling.org. I wanted a picture story book that had a lovely and not a cartoonish or otherwise irreverent style of art and that told the stories without watering them down. All the ones I checked out from the library told the story of Noah as one where “God knew there would be this flood, and he loved Noah, so he told Noah about it.” I want a story Bible that says, “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth. And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, ‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land.’ But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” I haven’t found this one at any local stores, so I’m hoping all the reviews and the samples I saw on Amazon are accurate and this will be what I am looking for. Hans’ basic Bible knowledge is miniscule; we have not done much at all because I haven’t just sat down and found and ordered a story Bible I like.

Repairing the Ruins

I figured it was time to buy the only Canon Press book about classical education we didn’t own. Besides, I like books that are collections of essays; it’s easier to digest a chapter as a whole than a book in its entirety. :)

Cantus Christi Piano Accompaniment CD

So now I can sing on key the psalms that still get stuck in my head 4 years later. Now I can teach them to the boys and foster in them the acquired taste of the Genevan psalter.

The Dragon and the Garden & In the Time of Noah

So, I was just planning on getting the Cantus CD, but I was on the well-told Bible story with good art kick anyway and saw these linked in an ad on the side. I couldn’t resist and Matt gave his thumbs-up quite rapidly. “I’ve heard Mr. N.D. Wilson is a pretty good author,” he said, “his father mentions it on his blog about every other post these days.” :)

From the Bookworm:

Joy of Cooking

This is what I found to spend most of my birthday gift certificate on; Matt says the cover is inexplicably creepy. Still, I learned quite a bit from this book when I was planning to do a cooking class for a friend at the age of 13 or 14 (I’d been cooking family dinners since I was 10). I have been in need lately of a basics cookbook beyond Better Homes & Gardens, and I like learning about the ingredients and processes beyond just what to do with them for each recipe. It’s a “Kitchen Keeping” book.

4 vociferations follow:

Let me know how that story book works out. We have a picture Bible story book, but although it’s not quite as watered down as the ones you mentioned it’s still rather too sappy to me. I don’t want people to be “sorry” I want them to REPENT! I tend to modify it as I read it though.

I requested, and received, the bread book for my birthday! I haven’t used it much yet (same reason), but I’m looking forward to experimenting with it more. At this point, (since I started getting it out of the library) the recipe I’ve used most is the one for Molasses Whole Wheat bread. We like it better than the one I used to make in my bread machine because it’s only half whole wheat flour and half bread flour, so the texture is easier on the tongue. I like the molasses touch.

Also, I read N.D. Wilson’s book about Adam and Eve at Camp. Interesting illustrations. I liked how Adam and Eve were wearing real clothes, not just Tarzan style pieces at the end. I didn’t really like the interpretation of how Adam came to eat the fruit… you’ll have to see how you like it when you get it!

I’m seriously considering adding the Joy of Cooking to my repertoir.. it’s expensive though, so I haven’t made the plunge, although I thought about using a birthday gift certificate for it. My mom always spoke highly of it, though.

Well, that was almost long enough to be a post on my blog! Sorry!

Yeah, I found “Joy” at the used bookstore in excellent shape for $15. There’s a new addition *edition* out, and this is the previous one, but it was hardback with the dust jacket and everything. And I had a $20 gift certificate. :)

Hey, my last comment on yours was as long as a post, as well! It’s fun getting comments. :)

Yikes! :) Misspelling isn’t my problem as much as just typing the sound in my head and ending up with the wrong word! :)
