More Thoughts on Hollywood’s Pride and Prejudice
Ok, so I’ve had my rant, now here’s what I thought was good about the Keira Knightly version.
Mr. Collins. I thought this actor’s portrayal of Mr. Collins was superb. He had the right folly and stupidity without being oily and absurd. A&E’s Mr. Collins is overdone. The extent of Mr. Collins’ ridiculousness might not have been fully developed in the modern version, but that’s because nothing was fully developed in it.
Lady Catherine. I like Judi Dench.
Yup. That’s about it.
I do have this disclaimer to make, in case you got the wrong impression from my rant. I do not necessarily have a problem with sexy movies or fancy camera work or even protagonists coming out from the mists of the early morning with half-undone shirts. What I have a problem with taking a classic piece of literature; completely disregarding the author’s tone, — and point; then passing it off to the uneducated, illiterate masses as a film version of the book. This had the same plot and the same character names, but the feel of this movie was as authentic to its namesake as the animated Hobbit was to Tolkien.

Okay, it came to me that I have seen parts of it. Reading your last post made me remember–the open shirt out of the mist thing. You are most certainly right. It was not true to Jane Austen at all.
