Winning at Dice Ball

Friday  in the early morning  Mystie

Hans created a new game yesterday. He had been carrying around a single die in his pocket all day, and in the late afternoon finally invented a game for he and his brother to play. He would throw the die across the room, listening to it crash and tumble along the wood floor, then run to it and loudly announce the number that he had rolled. Often he would add significance to the number: “Four! It’s my number! I am four!” Then it would be Jaeger’s turn to throw it — literally throwing it across the room. Hans would run to it and announce the number, “Three! You will be three soon!”

Both boys had a blast playing this game and it was after 15 minutes or so that Hans came running to me, telling me that he and Jaeger were playing “Dice Ball.” Matt thought it sounded violent. I chalked it up on my chart as “Math.”

Perhaps I could have counted it towards language arts if I had taken the time to intervene and teach; instead I listened and laughed from the kitchen and let them play their game. It was Jaeger’s turn. His dice clattered and rolled. Hans shouted, “One!” Jaeger jumped up and down exclaiming, “I won! I won!”
