All Written Down

“Help!” cried Toad. “My list is blowing away. What will I do without my list?”
“Hurry! said Frog. “We will run and catch it.”
“No!” shouted Toad. “I cannot do that.”
“Why not?” asked Frog.
“Because,” wailed Toad, “running after my list is not one of the things that I wrote on my list of things to do!”

Well, I haven’t completely followed my routine this week, but in the spirit of the routine being created for the Mommy and not the Mommy for the routine, I have been pleased with the rhythm of the days nonetheless. Having a written down “flow” for the days helps with the all-too-frequent instances of “Mommy brain” around here. I don’t fly by the seat of my pants well; I prefer to think things through and do what I do self-consciously. However, I don’t always have the brain power to think things through. So, being able to consult a list of what I would like to do and what we generally do do at certain times of the day has actually helped me adapt the non-typical days (which have been most of the days this week) and get more done still because I consciously chose what to skip and what to do. When I just let the day happen and “go with the flow” without attempting to direct that flow at all, the house and the attitudes around here get out of hand quite quickly. Some people can handle things casually and as they come and that works for them, but I need my lists.

So even though I’ve yet to have a day even close to the routine, I have felt more put together and in control. I have made progress this week and I can see that this is a workable routine and I am looking forward to following it more and more closely as the days wear on.

Good for you! I am still awaiting the arrival of my treadmill before I get started on our new routine. Procrastination will soon be coming to an end which is a good thing because Bennett is starting to be able to read by sight, and I haven’t started phonics with him yet. Yikes, slow down kid!
