Hons

Wednesday  around lunchtime  Mystie

“Well, Mom,” Hans changes the subject in the middle of a several-minute monologue, “I am just tired of having an ‘a’ in my name. I would like to have an ‘o’ next to the ‘H.’ I think that would be better. Ok? I’ll show you.”

Off he trots to the downstairs desk where his art stuff resides. One minute later, he shows me: “Hons.” And, if I want, I can call him “Honoo.” But he just wants ‘oo’ to say ‘oh.’

He certainly does get ideas, and he makes a lot of decisions based on what he wants. Someday he’ll learn that letters don’t change their sound based on his opinion, or that Bible verses don’t change their wording because he thinks his way of saying it is better, or that books say what the words say rather than what he would like them to say.

For example: “Well, Mom, I have a different idea for how to draw a 7. Did you know that sometimes a 7 looks like this? See, I name that a seven.” Well, no, it’s actually not a seven just because you call it one, my son.

Kindergarten might be rough. I am a mean mom and simply reply (usually with good humor), “Well, it doesn’t really matter what you want.”

And this picture about sums him up:
