Survival Mode Begins

So, Matt’s new career and our family’s new life has begun.

Matt was hired less than two weeks ago, had his first day at Kennewick Police Department on Friday, was sworn into his office today, and immediately thereafter departed for police academy with two other new officers from Kennewick. It has been a whirlwind week of preparations and new information and peeking into the unfolding of a new world. I’ve read all the health insurance information, Matt has hundreds of pages of training material already in hand and will receive hundreds more up in Spokane, and we are now part of a whole new group and world of people. It’s a good place and I’ve been more and more impressed with KPD the further Matt has gotten in and am very proud of him and excited for what the future holds. I think this is the right path for him and for our family.

But for now we will be husbandless and fatherless five days a week for nineteen weeks. Matt will come back on Fridays from police academy in Spokane, and while he’s gone I will be relying on my mom and mother-in-law for sanity breaks and my baby sister for nanny help. We’ll be eating spaghetti, mac and cheese from a box, bean and cheese burritos, and popcorn with cheese sticks quite a bit for the next few months, with a mess of soup once the weather cools off in two months or so. I have projects lined out for my lonely evenings, and if you have movie suggestions I welcome them. I might even finish my cross-stitch project. I will try to remember that Matt has a lot of hard studying and physical training ahead of him, and 5 days away is no vacation for him, though it may seem like a heavenly retreat to me in a few weeks. I would still take 5 days of single parenting over even 1 sit-up or 1 minute of running, and he will be doing much more than that — daily. Therefore, ahem, I also have “losing remaining baby weight” on my project list, seeing as I would otherwise overindulge in chocolate every evening and I don’t want to be the increasingly frumpy and dumpy wife next to an increasingly fit and trim uniformed husband.

And, yes, he does look amazing in uniform.

He does look amazing in his uniform! His new vocation appears to be an excellent match for him, and for you as well. It has been nice to hear various officers point out the importance of a supportive spouse to the success of a police officer. You certainly fit the bill!

Emma enjoyed the pictures of the day, and is looking forward to Jaeger’s teenage years when she can remind him of his ” I am wearing a shirt and therefore I will keep my eyes on it” pose in the family picture:)
