Commensing Book Club Notes
Last school year I had a book group with four high school students and one other adult that met in my home once a week during the boys’ nap time. We read 10 classics together. Now all four are at the community college and I miss having them over for coffee and discussion.
I noticed when making up my “read in 2008″ list that I read more while hosting book group. I didn’t just read more because of the books we were reading; even if those books were removed, I read more. Because I had to read the book group books in order to lead discussions, I was simply in the habit of reading and did it. After I fell out of the habit, I have read more blog posts and online articles and gotten out of the “pick up a book” habit.
But there are lots of books I want to read. And, so, to help cultivate the habit of reading as much as to read the specific books, I am doing two internet-based book groups. I hope it works. :) One is with Elly and I won’t post about it on my blog unless I really have something I want to compose. The other is hosted by Cindy at Dominion Family, and is blog-based. It is open to any who want to participate, so hop on board if you have the book and want to talk about it. She is reading All God’s Children and Blue Suede Shoes: Christians and Popular Culture. And so am I.
