First Grade Outline

First grade, for us, will be the year of geography (more geological & physical than sociological & cultural), fairy tales & historic tales, and technique or skill acquisition (handwriting, spelling, drawing, arithmetic). As we do our recitations, reading, and lessons, the emphasis will be on cultivating habits (of attention, precision, neatness, orderliness, cheerfulness) and taste (in music, art, stories, and language).

Phonics isn’t on here, because it can’t be plotted out. Phonics for Jaeger and phonics/reading for Hans will happen daily.

My calculations approximate that we’ll need 18 hours worth of read-aloud books per term. Most of the audio books we’ve borrowed from the library so far are 4-6 hours long. That would be an average of 4 read-alouds a term if I can get most of them on audio (I suspect my page-per-minute rate would be much less than the practiced professional, so maybe only 2 if I read aloud). I need to start that list and check the library’s collection, because that’s 24 books to find! My current list stands at about 10, and I haven’t checked it against the library’s collection yet.

And I’m going to end abruptly because I should be asleep right now, but I want to post this.
