Library Organization: Children’s Books

Done!

My almost-13-year-old sister Kirsten is staying with me for a few days while my parents lounge on a cruise ship, enjoying cocktails and sunshine and while I waddle around waiting for a baby to decide to make an appearance. Today during quiet time, the two of us organized the children’s picture books. We’ll see if it lasts more than two days.

Each bin is labeled with a category and a color.

And each book is labeled with a dot of the appropriate color. I used Sharpie markers, but only had 4 colors and 5 bins, so one bin remains unmarked.

Then the picture books found a new home in the coat closet, which is just a couple steps from the living room. Besides there being room to line them up in a neat row, I am hoping that not having the bins in a jumble in a corner of the living room will help promote the books not getting jumbled and tossed and piled and scattered.

One can always hope, at least.

The board books are in their own bin and are in the living room, separate, as they are the books Ilse is allowed to muck around with. Kirsten also helped me rearrange the living room and now Ilse has a little play corner behind a chair that I am hoping will be a cozy corner for her to occupy herself during school reading times.

One can always hope, at least.

  1. I think they call this nesting! Great system, we just might have to try it ourselves. Where do you get your books?

A significant portion of them have come from The Bookworm (the local used bookstore) and library sales. Others have been presents. Very few are ones I’ve purchased new. :)

I’ve looked so hard to try and find Round Robin. :|

Nice! I might have to try this with our children’s books. I have three shelves that sort the books by hight. Maybe if I labeled each shelf with a color and all the books with coordinating colors they would stay in place longer. As you say, one can always hope…
